Zula/annex's 'Water Pressure' EP found Henry and Nate working conceptually, building on anxieties around technology. The title of 'Water Pressure' emerged as a reference to the sound of the internet traveling through undersea optical fiber cables.
There's something aggressively trippy about information rushing through these deep sea cables. Like a strong mushroom trip wrenching your body, the harrowing excitement of this technology comes from a rushing, raw friction. Data surges through the deep ocean. Though humanity and technology cannot be separated from the natural world, there's no denying that modernity is out of tune with sustainable life on earth. Nature is corroding our shiny digital dreams.
The duo shifted back and forth between natural and digital sound sources on the EP, warping slick commercial samples and synths with analog filters, and twisting guitars and piano using digital pitch shifting and bitcrushing. All of the vocals were recorded through Skype calls. 'Water Pressure' refers to a future unfolding in both digital and physical realms.
